Illustrated edition with 68 illustrations by George Roux including 20 large chromotypography engravings and a map. Catalogue Y at end. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel known as "au globe" type 4, lighthouse spine, second cover type Engel "i" according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Spine slightly faded, endpapers replaced, a small discoloration stain on the second cover, corners slightly frayed. Le Sphinx des glaces is a fantastic novel, intended as a sequel to Edgar Poe's novel - to which it is dedicated -, Les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym, published in 1838. Copy not recorded by Jauzac.
