Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Histoire de la ville d'Autun, connu autrefois sous le nom de Bibracte, capitale de la république des éduens

    De l'imprimerie de Dejussieu|Autun 1802 An XI|21 x 27 cm|relié
Rare first edition, illustrated with a frontispiece map and 7 plates by Joubert and engraved by Adam.
Later half green shagreen binding, circa 1860. Spine with Jansenist raised bands. Spine sunned, turned brown. Wide margins, except at head. The engravings have smaller outer margins, the text leaves not having been trimmed.
The author establishes the remarkable history of Autun, not its extensive history. He dwells particularly on its great antiquity, at the time when it was the capital of the Aedui, one of the most influential peoples of Gaul, which had many cities under its dependence. The Aedui, whose power was broken by Rome, founded Milan when crossing the Alps. Autun under...

Binding in half dark green shagreen ca 1850. Spine with false raised bands decorated with compartments and fillets in cold and hot stamping. Rubbing to headcaps.
Though slender, the poetic production of the celebrated Swiss physician and naturalist played a determining role in the formation of German lyricism, not to mention that his poetry collections mark Switzerland's entry into literature.

Le moine marchand, ou traité contre le commerce des religieux

    Chez Pierre Brunel|à Amsterdam 1714|9.20 x 15.40 cm|relié

First edition of this French translation, illustrated with a frontispiece containing 3 figures and a title vignette by Quinau. A first translation had appeared under the title Hipparchus in 1645; one could not say however that this new translation carried out by a Protestant is literal, it is rather a free translation to which a pamphleteering charge has been added.
Contemporary full blonde sheep binding. Richly decorated raised spine. Beige morocco title-label. Wormholes on spine with a lack to title-label. Handsome copy nevertheless.
There would be according to the author, both a reprehensible commerce and one that would not be so.

New edition, illustrated with 32 figures by Punt and a title vignette repeated on all 4 volumes. Title pages in red and black. This appears to be the first edition to be fully illustrated, as previous editions presented only four frontispieces, however it should be noted that the figures bear the date 1742. The mention of third edition refers only to Dutch editions and is therefore not significant. Translation by Abbé Prévost and Aubert de la Chesnaye des Bois.
