New edition, considered the most beautiful and correct of the author's complete works. Illustrated with 8 portraits by A. de Saint-Aubin in volume I and 4 figures after Moreau le jeune in volume II. Near-contemporary bindings in full glazed blonde calf. Spines with five fine raised bands set with gilt friezes and decorated with typographical motifs and gilt fillets, gilt friezes at head and foot. Red morocco title and volume labels. Fillet and decorative gilt board-edges on covers. Yellow edges. One joint cracked and restored at foot. One stain at foot of second cover of first volume. Occasional foxing. Handsome copy. Antoine Hamilton is above all the author of the Mémoires du comte de Grammont, which Etiemble (author of the anthology of 18th-century authors in the Pléiade collection and rediscoverer of 18th-century authors like Crébillon fils) considers one of the masterpieces of the period. His tales were also appreciated, particularly Fleur d'épine or Le bélier. Despite the work accomplished by Etiemble, and the complete rehabilitation of Crébillon fils, Hamilton remains fully to be rediscovered.
