The rare first edition, with a frontispiece and 61 illustrations. Brown sheep, spine with decorated raised bands, roulette to head and foot, red morocco title piece. Three corners bumped. A good and fresh copy. The work puts together on two pages an extract from a literary work and its interpretation by Smids, as well as an illustration of a mythological scene by Schoonebeek (Alcestis, Hercules, Medea, Oedipus, etc...). The latter was a student of Romain de Hooghe, whose influence is clearly visible. This work is a magnificent example of the baroque illustrated book, alongside the La Fontaine of Romain de Hooghe.
