The 1642 edition entitled Medales illustrées des anciens Empereurs et Impératrices de Rome is the same work to which the publisher Paillot added the Médailles des impératrices from a manuscript he had purchased from the heirs.     The work puts together on two pages an extract from a literary work and its interpretation by Smids, as well as an illustration of a mythological scene by Schoonebeek (Alcestis, Hercules, Medea, Oedipus, etc...). The latter was a student of Romain de Hooghe, whose influence is clearly visible.
    This work is a magnificent example of the baroque illustrated book, alongside the La Fontaine of Romain de Hooghe.
