New edition, after the first edition of 1613, illustrated with an allegorical title-frontispiece, 15 folding plates, 18 figures and 8 vignettes in the text. Contemporary marbled and glazed brown full calf binding. Smooth spine decorated with 5 compartmentalized fleurons. Red morocco title label. Joints cracked at head. 2 corners slightly bumped, 2 trimmed. One folding plate protruding. Traces of rubbing. Fairly good copy. Important study of slavery and domestic family life in Antiquity. The work contains the duties, charges and legal status of slaves and servants in daily life, notably gladiators, musicians, actors, tax collectors and artisans. Pignoria's work constitutes an interesting insight into laborious existence within families during Antiquity. A short essay by Doctor Fabricius on food and addressed to Marcus Walser closes the work. This is one of the best ancient treatises on the subject.
