Portrait of Mary Hamilton by Toulouse-Lautrec. This cabaret singer is here presented in full flow, dressed in men's clothes. Lautrec was fond at this time of lithographic ink, drawing simple lines full of movement, reminiscent of Japanese ukiyo-e prints.

At the age of twenty-three, Maurice Saillet became the assistant and associate of the bookseller, publisher, and poet Adrienne Monnier at 7, rue de l’Odéon. There he met Gisèle Freund, and discovered André Gide and James Joyce.
After the war, he founded, with Maurice Nadeau, Les lettres nouvelles and published numerous unpublished texts by Alfred Jarry; he also issued the complete works of Lautréamont.
