The volume brings together seven stories previously published in Gil Blas between December 1881 and March 1882, then revised by Maupassant for their first appearance in book form. The edition comprised 2,000 copies on laid paper and a further 50 on Japan paper; the present copy is from the regular issue on laid paper. Etched portrait of Maupassant by Just as frontispiece. A naturalist, mathematician, and astronomer, Lambert-Adolphe Quetelet (1796–1874) was the founder of the Brussels Observatory.

Eight plates are hand-coloured: nos. 28, 41, and 61 to 66. The text volume was reissued in 1830 under a new imprint; the present issue is the true first publication of the work.

Contemporary full polished mottled calf. Spines with raised bands decorated with repeated ermine tools, red morocco lettering-pieces and tan morocco numbering-pieces. Restorations to the headcaps and joints of volumes I and II; headcap of volume IV worn away; corners rubbed and some surface wear. Nevertheless a fresh set overall.

A rare Belgian pirate edition in 8 tomes bound in 4, published shortly after the novel's first serial appearance in the Journal des débats from August 28, 1844 to January 15, 1846. Complete with all half titles and title pages. They are all dated 1845, except for the last two (vol. 7-8) dated 1846. The edition includes the misprint "Christo" for "Cristo", present in the pre-first edition of the Journal des débats, and corrected for the first time at the end of 1846 in the first illustrated edition.
