Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

The two volumes are joined, in a strictly uniform contemporary binding, by L'Homme plus que machine, a work long attributed to La Mettrie but now assigned to Élie Luzac. The three volumes thus form a contemporary collected set.

A complete recto-verso manuscript in a densely written hand, with numerous deletions, corrections, and additions.
Essay published on the occasion of the release of Father du Lubac’s Le Drame de l’humanisme athée.

After the war, the place of Friedrich Nietzsche—alongside the Marquis de Sade and Søren Kierkegaard—in Maurice Blanchot’s thought reflects the decisive influence of Georges Bataille and the philosophers he held in highest regard. From this point on, Blanchot devoted many texts to these figures, and “Du côté de Nietzsche”...

This plan for peace in Europe by the economist and philosopher Ange Goudar lays out the origins and impact of conflicts on European nations, putting the emphasis on their economic consequences. Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title label. Upper joint cracked at head and tail. Corners slightly bumped.
Satirical work mocking the Cartesians and the question of the soul and reason. Bougeant proposed that animals had recovered the souls of the wicked; this allusion, even ironic, to the transmigration of souls resulted in exile from the Jesuits at the college of La Flêche. The work enjoyed great success in Europe, and is primarily an attack against Descartes' mechanistic conception.

A treatise on moral philosophy and education in the taste of the 18th century, that is to say written with wit, style and eloquence, irony and seriousness, finesse and didacticism, and for good reason, this treatise was much read and appreciated in its time. If it invents nothing, the author assembles all the moral thought of the 18th century, heir to the moralists of the previous century, which is no small thing.

The moral philosophy essay is one of the two main philosophical texts (and chronologically the first) by Maupertuis, who, like all scholars of his era, was multidisciplinary. The second work in this field would be the Essay on Cosmology published in 1750.
