    New illustrated edition in first printing. The illustration comprises three frontispieces by Cochin, Moreau and Eisen, engraved by Gaucher, Ponce and Née; and 20 headpieces by Eisen, engraved by Helman, De Longueil, Masquelier and Massard. Elegant illustration with careful page layout.
    Full blonde tortoiseshell calf bindings. Spines with five raised bands decorated with gilt compartments and fleurons, as well as red and green sheep title and volume labels. Covers framed with triple gilt fillets. Gilt dentelles framing the pastedowns. All edges gilt. Head and foot of first volume with small lacks, those of the other two volumes rubbed. Five corners bumped. Numerous and scattered foxing (mainly at the beginning of the first volume).
    A novel originally published in 1665, which received its first illustration in 1720, this biographical episode disguised and transformed into a Greek pastoral tells of the misfortunes and adventures that prevented and delayed Le Vayer's marriage to Mlle Servin. The varied narrative draws its inspiration from Greek and Latin novels (Heliodorus's Aethiopica) or Cervantes's Persiles and Sigismunda. This novel, quite appreciated in its time, was adapted for opera in an eponymous work by Francoeur and Rebel.

    Numerous scenes of particularly violent combat, with decapitations and gushing blood; Court scenes. The figure of Sadahide is remarkably finely rendered and detailed, the grey and black wash adding contrast and depth.

Very numerous vignettes by Monnier, Français, Daubigny... The compositions with multitudes of vignettes by Bertall on subjects such as evenings at the opera, Paris by night... which constitute the ensemble of Paris comique are particularly delightful. This edition is rarer than le Diable à Paris.
    Contemporary green half-shagreen. Smooth spine decorated with series of romantic tools in compartments. Green corsillonné paper boards. Borders rubbed and corners slightly bumped. Some scattered foxing, principally in the outer margins, on good white paper. The text jumps from p. 5 to 41 without loss, the text continuing. Good copy.
    Portrait of Paris, in all its aspects, at the beginning of the Second Empire, Le tiroir du Diable sails on the success of le Diable à Paris with the same collective for texts and illustrations. One notes the presence of Balzac's text: Physiologie des boulevards, two texts by Sand and one by Musset. The other collaborators being celebrated litterateurs of this period, Edouard Ourliac, Frédéric Soulié... At the beginning of the work, Lavallée's text on the geography of Paris (which was also present at the beginning of le Diable à Paris). At the end of the work, statistics of Paris, the work always wanting to be both entertaining and informative. In this regard, all the texts, satirical or not, of the work are more or less of journalistic character, but as journalism was then practiced under the Second Empire. The work concludes with the statistics of Paris.

This appears to be the first edition to be fully illustrated, as previous editions presented only four frontispieces, however it should be noted that the figures bear the date 1742. The mention of third edition refers only to Dutch editions and is therefore not significant. Translation by Abbé Prévost and Aubert de la Chesnaye des Bois.
    Contemporary full brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Red morocco title and volume labels. Head of volume I split at head. A lack at head of volume II. A lack to the upper joint at foot of volume I. Tailpiece partly missing on volume III. Corners slightly bumped. Rubbing. Scattered foxing.
    Pamela was a veritable sensation in the literary world and achieved resounding success throughout Europe. Its principal merit is undoubtedly having given birth not only to the epistolary novel (Rousseau) but to Fielding who produced two satirical sequels: The Adventures of Joseph Andrews and Tom Jones. We know that Diderot was unstinting in his praise of this novel. Pamela is a novel of manners and a sentimental novel whose impact on 18th-century literature is indelible and enduring. It is often considered the first bourgeois novel of manners, and this shift of the action's setting from aristocracy to bourgeoisie had an enormous impact.
