Illustrated edition with 11 drawings by De Neuville and Riou. Catalogue DX bound in at the end of the volume (12pp.), from the Magasin d'éducation et de récréation.
Publisher's pictorial cloth binding "with the two elephants," in the very rare aubergine colourway. Front board stamp signed Souze, with the A.L. et Cie binder's ticket at the foot (1887 variant); rear board of the Lenègre type, with a central blind-stamped medallion on a black ground.
Superb front board. Spine with crisp gilt; tailcap crushed. Rear board fine, with a few darker patches. Rubbing to the headcap and tailcap and to the corners. Edges evenly toned. Corners sharp. Colour retouched at the headcap, tailcap and corners, and gilt retouched on the fillets of the headcap. Spine very slightly faded. A few traces of rubbing to the rear board.
Clean, glossy percaline cloth throughout. Fresh, with scattered foxing, notably to the title page and the last leaves.
A very handsome and rare copy.
