Le juif errant is one of the greatest bestsellers of the 19th century, published just after Les mystères de Paris. To the narrative qualities of Les mystères de Paris, Le juif errant adds the intervention of the supernatural and the fantastic, represented by the legendary vagabond who gives his name to the book. Preceded by cholera, which inspired Eugène Sue to write anthology pages, the legendary Jew returns from beyond the seas and beyond the centuries to prevent the Society of Jesus from seizing a fabulous fortune by eliminating its heirs one by one. Le juif errant being an adventure novel taking place in the four corners of the world. It triggered an anti-Jesuit movement in France.
If Eugène Sue is more or less forgotten today, he was not only one of the most famous novelists of the 19th century but the most read in Europe, and even Dostoevsky was a regular reader of his work.
Few writers of this era benefited from the editorial qualities demonstrated by Les mystères de Paris and Le juif errant, abundantly and superbly illustrated. He was Dumas's main competitor, and the latter thought he would even outlive him.

Bound in half navy blue glazed calf with corners, spine with five raised bands set with gilt fillets and decorated with double gilt compartments richly ornamented with gilt typographical motifs, red morocco title and volume labels, some traces of rubbing on the spine, frame of dentelle fillets stamped in blind on pebbled paper boards, pebbled paper endpapers and pastedowns, bookplates pasted on pastedowns, marbled edges, small tears on the leading edges, contemporary bindings.
A masterpiece of great darkness, Little Dorrit is Dickens' second novel of three political and social novels. It is the denunciation of a Victorian society obsessed with wealth and power. George Bernard Shaw would judge the novel "More seditious than Karl Marx's Capital".

Ronéotype réalisé par Boris Vian de son manuscrit original, avec ajout autographe du titre : "Le penseur" et deux corrections autogrpahes, nouvelle initialement parue dans la revue Dans le train n°15, 1949, puis publiée dans le recueil posthume Le Loup-Garou en 1970.

Sans doute réalisé pour conserver une copie de sa nouvelle, avant l'envoi à la revue Dans le train, ce ronéotype du manuscrit originale signé a été conservé dans les archives de l'écrivain jusqu'à sa mort. les deux corrections autogrpahes et le titre au crayon semble indiquer que Boris Vian avait prévu une nouvelle publication.

Cette biogaphie express de la courte vie d'un philosophe de génie : Urodonal Carrier, était destinée à être lue le temps d'un trajet en transport en commun. Elle fait partie douze textes que Boris Vian publia entre 1948 et 1950 dans la revue humoristique Dans le train.

Their correspondence seems to reveal that in the 1970s the old writer was hunting around the world, with his last companion Sophie de Vilmorin, for works for their collection. At the end of his life, he thus rediscovered this youthful passion which inspired his first work, La Voie Royale.

We have found only four copies in public collections (National Library of France, British Library, Library of Château d'Oron, Switzerland, and National Library of Hungary).

The back cover, also preserved, bears on the verso: Typographie E. et V. Penaud frères.
Full dark green shagreen binding, 20th century, in the spirit of a contemporary binding of the edition. Smooth spine decorated with 2 gilt frames. Boards decorated with a wide frame of multiple fillets. Top edge gilt. Original wrappers and spine preserved. Binding executed on the original sheets, the paper therefore remains uncut. This copy shows some recurring dampstains as follows: Volume 1, from p.95 to 238, pale dampstain at lower right corner then at mid-page. Volume 2, pale dampstain at upper left corner throughout. In volume 4, from p.5 to 192, dampstain at lower margin, right corner. Volume 5, pale dampstain, yellow halo at mid-page throughout, more or less pronounced. Volume 6, Dampstain at mid-page over the first third, then small stains in upper margin. Volume 7, pale dampstain in upper margin at right corner, from beginning to p. 150, resuming from p. 230 to 300. Volume 9, scattered dampstains at mid-page then in corners in the margin. Volume 12, dampstain on the first 2 leaves in upper margin at corner, then resuming on several leaves. Most of these stains show a yellow halo without serious consequence. Scattered foxing.
Fine copy of the first edition of one of the most important texts of French literature, with the rare original wrappers preserved.
