    Handsome and very rare full-margined copy of this work which denounces the misdeeds of French colonization in the Maghreb.
    Mission providentielle, published in 65 copies at the author's expense under the pseudonym François Lazerge, consists of a first version of La Rose de sable which would appear, in its definitive version, at Henri Lefebvre in 1967.
    Finally, fearing to attract the wrath of the authorities, Henri de Montherlant refused to distribute Mission providentielle and published it only privately.

    Fervent admirer and lover of Henri de Montherlant whom she nicknamed her "dear Rilet," Alice Poirier maintained, from 1927 to 1950, an important correspondence with the writer, letters to which the latter did not always respond but which he kept to nourish his work.
    Thus, Alice Poirier served as model for the two principal female figures, Andrée Hacquebaut and Solange Dandillot, of the tetralogy cycle of "Jeunes filles."
    Brilliant doctor of philosophy, she was equally close to Pierre Drieu la Rochelle and Jean Paulhan and drew from her epistolary correspondence with her great love, in 1955, a largely autobiographical novel entitled Récit de Grete in which Henri de Montherlant appeared under the character of Michel Cabrol.

    In the first article of Carte blanche (1919), Jean Cocteau praises the young actor Marcel Herrand, then aged twenty-two: "The new spirit is stirring all branches of art. Young actors are putting themselves at the service of modern poetry. Marcel Herrand (who created 'Les Mamelles de Tirésias' and various masked roles in 'Le Dit des jeux du monde') was the first to surprise us with his rhythm, his straight voice and his disdain for effect. Gestures, intentions, bleats, shouts, smiles, the nuances beneath each syllable, the play of timbre, all disappear here to make way for a typographic reading. An inky black. Clean-cut words fall off the page one after the other. The actor does not substitute his emotion for that of the poet. He serves him instead of using himself."
    During the 1920s, Cocteau entrusted several roles to the talented Marcel Herrand: first as a phonograph in "Les Mariés de la tour Eiffel" (1921), he won the male lead in 'Roméo et Juliette' (1924) and even played the angel Heurtebise in the first cast of his famous 'Orphée' in 1926.
    Moving and early inscription by Jean Cocteau, in homage to one of his favorite actors.

    First edition of this rare fascicle, unnumbered, and printed in a small number on Dutch laid paper. Illustrated with a portrait of Albert Cuyp after Maurin.
    In sheets under gray-green publisher's wrapper printed in black and red, 5 pages of lithographed music (Imp. Delanchy), publisher's wet stamp on blank verso of last leaf. Very small nicks at head and tail of soft cover spine, copy in pristine condition.
    Poetic and musical portrait of the Dutch Golden Age painter Albert Cuyp, created jointly by Marcel Proust and Reynaldo Hahn who accompanies the writer's verses with a piano melody.
    This is the first of four portraits of painters that Proust and Hahn admired at the Louvre (they devoted the following ones to Paul Potter, Anton Van Dyck and Antoine Watteau). The luxurious fascicles were sold separately as indicated on the printed cover. For each of them, Proust's verses specially composed for the occasion are printed in italic characters under reproductions of old engravings offering portraits of the painters evoked. The poems would be published the same year in the first edition of Plaisirs et les Jours. Hahn's melodies were premiered at Madeleine Lemaire's on May 28, 1895, in the presence of prestigious spectators, including Princess Edmond de Polignac, Count Robert de Montesquiou, José Maria de Heredia to whom the poems were dedicated, Count Primoli, as well as Anatole France.

    "The interposition of the poem between painting and music has therefore proven to be an excellent conduit between the arts thanks to the fact that Hahn scrupulously respected the spirit of the poem while preserving his autonomy in his composition. The link between music and painting reveals itself after the other materials unite with each other; it is in this alliance that an astonishing complementarity then operates, desired on the soothing light of Albert Cuyp" (Nicolas Vardon)

A small fragment missing from the head of volume II. A fine copy.
    In many respects, the work is a guide to London, but it is also a satirical novel that presents life in London through the adventures of 3 characters, Tom Corinthian, Jerry Hawthorne and Bob Logic. The three companions thus visit many places in London, their perception being influenced by their social rank. Real life in London is in fact a sequel and imitation of Life in London by Pierce Egan, whose author is unknown. The work, in a comic vein, had great popular success; much more significant than its model: Life in London.

    Spine very lightly darkened, corners slightly bumped, some minor foxing.

    Printer's imprint dated July 31, 1944, the entire print run of this edition has been destroyed.
    Small tears to corners and lacks of paper to margins of the boards, three light spots on the second board; traces of discoloration due to glue on the bare spine, intended to welcome a softcover that, to our knowledge, has never been produced.
    An extremely rare work, one of probably only a few dozen copies printed for Gallimard proofreaders.
