First French edition in the translation by Mme. Bressant, under the direction of P. Lorrain, with the author's accreditation noted by a notice. Contemporary half dark green morocco binding. Spine with raised bands decorated with compartments with thick fillet, fillets. Traces of rubbing. Some scattered foxing in the first volume otherwise relatively fresh overall. Novel written in a markedly darker vein featuring the excessive pride of a tyrannical father driven by ambition against the unwavering love of his daughter whom he completely ignores. One finds there, as always with Dickens, a fine perception of the social tensions of the era.
