    New edition revised by the author, illustrated with 4 copper-engraved plates by Morel after drawings by Chaudet (Cohen, col. 927). A sumptuous publication from the press of Pierre Didot l'aîné, the foremost printer of his day. This edition is distinguished from all previous ones by its entirely renewed illustration in a neoclassical spirit, in keeping with the aesthetic of the Directoire period. It is the first to have been revised by the author himself.

The work is illustrated with 75 plates - 40 in volume I, including the frontispiece, and 35 in volume II, likewise including the frontispiece - engraved under the direction of L. Petit after paintings from the Italian, French and Flemish schools, together with a folding map of Palestine. Entirely printed on laid paper watermarked “Vie de J.C.”

Wide interior border. Light rubbing to headcaps and raised bands; one scratch on the lower board; 2 corners slightly rubbed. Very handsome copy.
    Apology and hagiography of Saint John the Baptist constructed according to theological virtues, by a preacher of the order of Discalced Augustinians.

    Half navy blue morocco binding with corners, spine with five raised bands set with gilt dots decorated with double gilt compartments richly embellished with gilt typographical motifs as well as a mosaic piece of hazel morocco, gilt date at foot, very light traces of rubbing without consequence on the spine, double gilt fillet frame on marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, top edge gilt, contemporary unsigned binding but attributable to Lancelin.


    Handsome copy agreeably bound.

    First edition of this translation by Moutonnet de Clairfonds, and first issue of the illustration, which comprises a frontispiece, 12 headpieces and 13 tailpieces by Eisen, engraved by Massard and Duclos. Title page in red and black.
    Full red morocco binding, late 19th century, signed Pickering. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Wide inner decorative border. Edges gilt. Small brown stains on upper cover. Despite the minor defects noted, a very fine copy.
    Cohen rightly cites this work as "one of the most elegantly illustrated books of the 18th century"; Eisen's contribution is indeed delicate and inspired, and the headpiece engravings are superbly executed.

    Our copy is complete with the frontispiece and the facsimile of the signatures of Molière and his daughter.
