    Our copy is enhanced with a visiting card by Charles De Gaulle mounted on a stub in the first volume on which he added these words: "Merci, bien sincèrement de la sympathie que vous m'avez témoignée. C.G." ["Thank you, very sincerely for the sympathy you have shown me. C.G."].
    Also mounted on a stub below the card, we include the envelope stamped by the Presidency of the Republic and addressed to Claude Morgan, recipient of the visiting card (postmarked January 19, 1960).

    The finest edition of this work, the original having appeared in 1756. It comprises 84 plates, 61 of which are folding, compared to only 40 in the original, engraved in intaglio by Moitte, Patte and Tardieu, depicting military costumes, plans and profiles, and troop formations. Published by Abbé Perau, this edition is augmented with a biography (134pp.) and several pieces (letters...), it is better organized and superbly printed in large type.
    Contemporary full marbled and glazed calf binding. Decorated raised spine, head and tail rolls. Red morocco title label and volume label. Double gilt fillet frame on boards. One tear at tail. One lower corner cut on volume 1. Small lack at head of volume II. One corner bumped on volume II. One scratch on upper board of volume II. One plate protruding in volume I and 2 in volume II, caused by improper folding. Despite some minor defects, a very handsome copy.

The 10th volume, in uniform binding, is the refutation of Raguse's memoirs by Laurent de Lardeche: Réfutation des Mémoires du Maréchal Marmont, Duc de Raguse devant l'histoire.
    Contemporary half black shagreen binding. Smooth spine in Jansenist style with cold fillets. Gilt title and volume number. Boards rubbed. One library label at the foot of volume 5. Some foxing on an otherwise fresh set. Good copy.
    "Of first order for Bonaparte's youth, but only for this period. Does not Marmont declare that he admires the young officer and despises the Emperor? These very detailed memoirs on all the campaigns of the Duke of Raguse therefore call for many reservations not only because of the late nature of their composition but also because of their desire to constantly present the author in a favorable light compared to Napoleon. This plea was refuted by Laurent de l'Ardèche in 1857". Tulard, 963. Very well documented work. Second lieutenant at 15, Marmont is already captain when he meets young Bonaparte at Toulon. He becomes his aide-de-camp and follows the general to Italy, then to Egypt.

    First edition never put into commerce, intended for members of the royal family and state dignitaries. It is printed on strong vellum, the only issue with 6 on China paper. Work illustrated with 200 vignettes in the text and 40 out-of-text figures engraved on wood, printed before letters on applied China paper, by Raffet, Decamps, Dauzat. Our copy is complete with its folding map at the end (Route de Philippeville à Alger). Fine work very well printed, with high quality engravings.
    Publisher's Bradel binding covered with chamois paper, chamois slipcase (probably later). Smooth spine with beige calf title label. Spine slightly darkened with damage to the title label and at two places on the spine. Rubbing at foot revealing the white underneath. Some occasional foxing, notably to tissue guards, on perfectly white paper. The captions for the plates are found at the bottom of the tissue guards.
    Book recounting the Duke of Orléans' expedition to Algeria in 1839. It was written by the writer Charles Nodier, based on notes taken by the young prince. Major account of the conquest of Algeria.

    Signed autograph letter by the British sculptor sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey, to the Saint-Paul Cathedral's committee, about his four monuments to military heroes from the Napoleonic wars commissioned by the government.
    Sir Chantrey, leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, carved the portraits of Major-General Daniel Hoghton, Major-General Bowes, and Colonel Henry Cadogan, and (in a single monument) Major-Generals Gore and Skerrett.
    He gives in this letter an estimate for five marble statues of generals from the British army, four of which have ultimately not been selected by the committee and replaced by other names.

    Autograph letter from the painter Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret, regarding one of his most famous paintings depicting future soldiers of the Great War, entitled "Les Conscrits", now held in the collections of the Assemblée nationale in Paris. 2 pages on a folded sheet.
    Trained in the studios of Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme, Dagnan-Bouveret received the second prize of Rome. Of naturalist inspiration, he devoted himself to religious painting and had a prolific career as a portraitist at the end of his life. He received prestigious commissions from the Countess of Béarn and the New York Frick family.
    Known for his Breton subjects in realistic style, Dagnan-Bouveret painted during 1890 young conscripts drawn by lot to perform their military service. The youngest is depicted draped in the tricolor flag which he brandishes. "If the painter Dagnan-Bouveret created realistic portraits of these conscripts, it is almost certain that these men experienced fire during the First World War" (cf. expositions.bnf)

    Autograph letter signed by the military painter and illustrator Edouard Detaille to the Minister of War Adolphe Messimy, one folded sheet. The painter had been charged with renovating the French army uniform and delivers here a first version of the helmet, which would be reworked by Louis Adrian and used during the First World War.
    The painter presents a prototype of his helmet and requests that a few hundred be made: "J'ai l'honneur de vous adresse le casque que j'ai fait fabriquer pour l'infanterie, et dont l'adoption dès maintenant avait été décidée pour la batterie à cheval de la garnison de Paris. Je tiens absolument à la propriété de ce modèle, que j'ai étudié avec grand soin, et qui ne saurait subir de modifications sous peine de perdre tout son caractère artistique et son côté pratique. Je me mets donc à votre disposition pour en assurer l'exécution. Il ne s'agit pas à proprement parler d'une fourniture : c'est un essai et il suffit de 200 à 250 casques environ. [...]" ["I have the honor of sending you the helmet that I had manufactured for the infantry, and whose adoption from now on had been decided for the horse battery of the Paris garrison. I am absolutely committed to the ownership of this model, which I have studied with great care, and which could not undergo modifications without losing all its artistic character and practical aspect. I therefore put myself at your disposal to ensure its execution. It is not strictly speaking a supply: it is a trial and only about 200 to 250 helmets are needed. [...]"]. This first version was presented to the public and described in an article in Gil Blas January 24, 1912: "Ce casque est acier bleui avec cimier bronzé surmontant le milieu de la bombe. La visière et son cache-nuque sont uniformes, ce qui permet de le porter des deux faces. Le casque n'a ni endroit, ni envers, et il est ornementé de deux têtes de lion en acier servant à fixer la jugulaire, également en acier bronzé. Le côté gauche est garni d'une cocarde tricolore rajoutée" ["This helmet is blued steel with a bronzed crest surmounting the middle of the bowl. The visor and its neck guard are uniform, which allows it to be worn on both sides.     A treatise on military defense and attack strategy. It draws on concrete examples situated on a plain, at a ford, on a bridge, in a castle or a village.
    The work concludes with a Summary for representing military plans, dealing with colors appropriate for wash drawings of plans, their use, and a short treatise on the Construction of military perspective.
    The book is particularly remarkable for its illustration. Louis Marin Bonnet perfected the process of crayon manner engraving in the 1770s. The instructions given by Fossé for wash drawings are taken into account for the color printing of these prints. Bonnet attributed the invention to himself, calling himself "first engraver of this type"; in fact, he improved upon the process created by his master Demarteau. Nevertheless, Bonnet perfected printing with two crayons (black heightened with white) and printing in miniature or pastel manner, thus becoming a direct competitor to the Gautier-Dagoty.

    Contemporary German full red morocco binding. Richly decorated raised band spine. Beige morocco title label. Boards decorated with dentelle border with large corner fleurons, double fillet frame and border frieze, all in succession. Spine slightly faded. Some rubbing throughout. Frontispiece browned as well as several leaves. Fine copy in a rare German full red morocco binding.
    The military art treatise by Vegetius, Roman author from the early 5th century, was tremendously successful during the Middle Ages and the modern era, particularly during the Renaissance. It was commented upon by several authors including Steewech.
