    Carl Einstein is an anarchist writer, art historian, friend of George Grosz, Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, collaborator of Jean Renoir, lived through the wars and revolutions that shook Europe during the first part of the twentieth century. He volunteer during the Spanish civil revolution in 1936 and went to Barcelona to fight in the ranks of the Confédération nationale du tra
    vail (National Labor Confederation), before joining the Groupe international de la Colonne Durruti (Durruti Column International Group). Of Jewish faith, he committed suicide in 1940 to avoid failing into the hands of the Nazis.

    Magnificent copy perfectly set in a full inlaid box binding signed by Georges Leroux, one of the greatest binders of the second part of the 20th century.

    Political history of Europe from 1786 to 1815. The author studies the politics of the cabinets of all the great powers in their conduct of war against the French Revolution. The author shows how the Revolution in France overturned the old political and moral world of Europe. The second part of the work, which we owe to d'Allonville, deals in turn with Europe during the First Empire and the change that took place in European politics. Both authors seek to capture the secrets of history's march, meticulously retracing how the upheavals of the Revolution and Empire came about. An officer since 1778 in an infantry regiment of the king's army, François-Armand d'Allonville exercised military functions as far as Russia during the Empire; it was when he returned to France in 1828 that he assisted Alphonse de Beauchamp in various historical works.

    Treatise and manual of chemistry according to the German theories of Becker and Stahl. Becker originated the phlogiston theory, which held that a principle of combustion was present and active in air, a theory that would be disproved by Lavoisier's experiments on combustion. This phlogiston theory was perfected by Stahl. Demachy devoted his life to spreading German chemistry and successfully translated various treatises. Demonstrator of natural history at the College of Chemistry founded by Louis XVI, Demachy held this position from 1777 to 1801 and, faithful to German theories, refused the evolution of chemistry introduced by Lavoisier and others. Demachy's work is very comprehensive on the history of chemistry and contemporary knowledge.

    Modern half marbled tawny calf binding with small corners. The spine is a skillful and deceptive pastiche of the original binding. The boards are period, unchanged. Smooth spine decorated with roulettes. Gilt title. Boards and corners rubbed. The map is detached. The 2 single plates are shorter on the outer margin. A handsome copy.
    Just after Bonaparte's Egyptian Campaign, Grobert was placed as commander at Giza. He provides us with one of the first Western descriptions of the pyramids with very fine details and measurements, as well as their histories. The work also contains a description of the city of Cairo. The volumes of the Description de l'Égypte would not appear until 1810 (dated 1809).

    The first work published by the chemist and pharmacist Pierre Joseph Macquer, before composing his dictionary of chemistry in 1766 which made him famous. Working alongside Sigaud de la Fond then Lavoisier, he was one of the protagonists of modern chemistry and the abandonment of the Aristotelian system of 4 elements (air, water, earth and fire). In his work, he attempts like other chemists of his era to unveil substances similar to all elements. Following this first volume, Macquer would compose the Elements of Practical Chemistry.

His experiments were numerous and engaged in many fields: electricity, but also phosphorus, toothpaste recipes, medicine... Over time, he would devote himself more fully to his physics cabinet and his experiments, while maintaining a teaching activity admired throughout Europe.

Once published, the text achieved great success due to its pious character, Pellico having found hope only through the Catholic religion. The work also contains poetry.

Black shagreen title and volume labels. Minor traces of rubbing. Restoration to the verso of the title page of volume 2, filling a thin tear in the margin over 3 cm. P. 149, lack to margin. Fine copy, very fresh.
    President de Brosses made his journey to Italy in the years 1739 and 1740, then aged 30, some letters date from this period and were indeed sent from Italy, but most were written after the journey. These letters are of interest both for the fine arts and customs, the author shows himself to be a refined and light observer and gives us the most charming portrait of Italy ever written, like a delightful stroll full of anecdotes and witty remarks, he speaks particularly of music, of his visit to Vivaldi and to the young girls of L'hôpital de la piété (Ospedale de la Pieta). Although other editions followed this first one in the 19th century, claiming to be more correct, this first edition is the most faithful to the manuscripts, even though it was produced with a certain carelessness. It was Antoine Sérieys, archivist, who produced this edition with rather piquant notes since they reflect a post-revolutionary spirit.
