    The first work published by the chemist and pharmacist Pierre Joseph Macquer, before composing his dictionary of chemistry in 1766 which made him famous. Working alongside Sigaud de la Fond then Lavoisier, he was one of the protagonists of modern chemistry and the abandonment of the Aristotelian system of 4 elements (air, water, earth and fire). In his work, he attempts like other chemists of his era to unveil substances similar to all elements. Following this first volume, Macquer would compose the Elements of Practical Chemistry.

    An extraordinary pedagogue and demonstrator, Sigaud de la Fond early attended the courses of Abbé Nollet (no less famous for his experiments in physics and electricity) whom he would succeed, and quickly assembled a cabinet of experimental physics. His experiments were numerous and engaged in many fields: electricity, but also phosphorus, toothpaste recipes, medicine... Over time, he would devote himself more fully to his physics cabinet and his experiments, while maintaining a teaching activity admired throughout Europe.

    The author's most famous work, whose classical prosody is still acclaimed today. Although not a member of any school, and especially not that of Malherbe and his disciples, Saint-Amant's style and manner are classical, recounting the story of Moses in the epic genre and in continuous verse. This highly readable, hyperbolic poetry has clear echoes of Victor Hugo. Preface by the author.

    My Prisons is the memoir of a man incarcerated by arbitrary power. Following the Neapolitan and Piedmontese revolution against the Austrian occupiers, all prominent figures including Silvio Pellico were imprisoned for ten years at Spielberg in Moravia. Once published, the text achieved great success due to its pious character, Pellico having found hope only through the Catholic religion. The work also contains poetry.

    Bound in half speckled brown sheep with flamed yellow paper boards, a skillful pastiche from the late 19th century. Smooth spine decorated with thick and thin fillets. Black shagreen title and volume labels. Minor traces of rubbing. Restoration to the verso of the title page of volume 2, filling a thin tear in the margin over 3 cm. P. 149, lack to margin. Fine copy, very fresh.
    President de Brosses made his journey to Italy in the years 1739 and 1740, then aged 30, some letters date from this period and were indeed sent from Italy, but most were written after the journey. These letters are of interest both for the fine arts and customs, the author shows himself to be a refined and light observer and gives us the most charming portrait of Italy ever written, like a delightful stroll full of anecdotes and witty remarks, he speaks particularly of music, of his visit to Vivaldi and to the young girls of L'hôpital de la piété (Ospedale de la Pieta). Although other editions followed this first one in the 19th century, claiming to be more correct, this first edition is the most faithful to the manuscripts, even though it was produced with a certain carelessness. It was Antoine Sérieys, archivist, who produced this edition with rather piquant notes since they reflect a post-revolutionary spirit.

    This history of the Spanish conspiracy against Venice was originally published in 1618, and had meanwhile become a great classic of historical literature.     Surgeon and man of letters, Petit-Radel is responsible for several books on eroticism, notably Érotopsie, ou coup d'œil sur la poésie érotique. A publisher's preface introduces the author. Latin poetry inspired by Latin authors, of a gentle and sentimental eroticism.

    The upper quarter of the half-title cut away, presumably to remove traces of a former owner. One faint dampstain to inside margin of final gatherings, not serious.
    A very good and rare copy.

The edition is composed of certain volumes from the first editions to which a half-title has been added.

Head of first volume worn down, head of second volume partly torn away. Head of volume 5 partly worn. Tail of volume 4 with loss. A cut at tail of volume 3. Most corners bumped. Set rubbed and worn.
