Rare first edition, translated into Portuguese from the unpublished French manuscript by Gaetano Lopez de Moura. The map of Brazil and the 5 city plans announced were never printed, as evidenced by copies in the British Library, Oxford, and the University of Araquara in Brazil, the first two fully digitized by Google, the third by the biblioteca digital; likewise, copies that have appeared at auction in recent years lack illustrations. Contemporary half dark green shagreen binding. Spine with false raised bands decorated with 3 compartmentalized fleurons. Gilt title and volume number. Initials at foot: E.P.B. Minor rubbing traces. Handsome copy. One of the first works to give a complete description and history of Brazil with all its provinces and cities. Precious.
