L’abréviation provient du latin sine loco, « sans lieu », et apparaît traditionnellement dans la description des livres anciens lorsque l’imprimeur ou l’éditeur n’a pas précisé la ville d’impression.
Cette absence peut être volontaire — pour des raisons politiques, religieuses, commerciales ou de censure — ou simplement due à une omission typographique. Dans l’histoire du livre, la mention s.l. joue ainsi un rôle important : elle signale une zone d’incertitude et invite bibliographes et historiens à identifier, par comparaison typographique ou contextuelle, l’atelier ou la région d’origine réelle de l’ouvrage.

This set is followed by 36 lithographed plates published around 1800 of architectural details from the buildings of ancient Rome, based on the famous book by Desgodetz on the ancient buildings of Rome. All the engravings are on thick paper.

    Complete manuscript of the Fables established under Napoleon I, by a prisoner whose identity is not reached us, interned in Pinerolo (Piedmont).
    The set was written on two rolls of paper laid strong consist of multiple segments bonded to each other with a total length of 250 meters (800 feet) and 3 inches wide.
    Indication probably later in pencil revealing the author's condition, the place and year of detention.
    Beautiful writing in black ink on two lines then, the shares are rubricated a grid in red ink, we find the reverse handwritten graduation old regime foot (32.48 cm).
