Illustrated edition by De Neuville and Benett. First edition in Engel's cartonnage cloth binding 'aux deux éléphants', with the palmettes on the last cover without the central macaron (which appeared as early as 1877). The later two-elephant covers are by Lenègre (from 1878). For the first time in the history of this collective edition, the order of the texts is reversed and the work begins with Le tour du monde en 80 jours, as is indicated in the title. Soft green "aux deux éléphants" covers with Engel signature at bottom of spine. "Engel" type last cover with palmettes. Brown endpapers. Superb first plate, with bright gilt decoration and contrasted black contours. Glossy cloth binding throughout. Top corner slightly bent, others a little rubbed. Attractive spine motifs in gilt. Slight wear at head and folded end of spine, and very little piece missing at head of spine, with rubbed edges. Joints a little rubbed. Second cover very good but traces of scratches. Interior is fresh overall, despite occasional foxing. One leaf partially detached. A very fine copy.

New edition illustrated with in-text drawings by Benett and Neuville. First issue with these printed portrait covers with 3 black full page illustrations for Le Tour du monde and 2 frontispieces. This type of binding was used from 1892 to 1898, with variations.

Attractive first cover with bright gilt decoration, a little piece missing at the corner of the portrait, 2 vertical gray traces in the world map. One split corner. Spine quite good, with some of the gilt lacking in the lighthouse beams and rubbing near the beams; spine-ends folded. Second cover with 2 pale whitish stains at bottom and small scratched dots in the macaron. Scattered, unevenly distributed foxing, numerous on some pages, almost non-existent on most pages. A few leaves more yellowed. p. 68 of Master Zacharius, 2 thin tears restored. A good copy.

Rare first edition of the second work by Jules Verne, and his first science-fiction novel, one year before the illustrated boards appeared.

Bound in half red shagreen, spine in four compartments set with blind tooled fillets and adorned with double gilt spine panels and a blind tooled spine panel, frame of blind tooling on the paper boards, white iridescent silk endpapers, all edges gilt, contemporary binding. Some minor foxing.
100 years before Neil Armstrong's “giant leap”, Jules Verne already attributed space conquest to the United States by recounting how the Baltimore Gin Club, after the Civil War, tried to send men to the moon in a shell. It was this reading as a child that inspired Georges Méliès to make the first science-fiction film in the history of cinema.

This Voyage Extraordinaire de la Terre à la Lune will be the source of many other scientific, artistic, literary vocations and even the great captains of industries who have today taken up the torch of Jules Verne's interstellar dream!

Extremely rare original photograph showing Jules Verne in medallion on albumen paper, contemporary print in carte-de-visite format, mounted on a board from the Carjat & C^ie studio.

It is possible to date the photograph thanks to the card indicating in particular the address, rue Notre-Dame de Lorette, where Carjat was based between 1866 and 1869.
We have not been able to find any copy of this very rare photograph taken when the writer was around 40 years old.
Carjat took another portrait of the novelist in 1876 for his famous Galerie contemporaine. This earlier photograph – perhaps reserved for the private sphere – prefigures this future and very emblematic portrait: Verne is partially turned away, looking into the distance.

A corner a little worn and the covers very slightly rubbed. Scattered foxing more pronounced at the beginning and end of the volume and a few sets of pages sticking out.

A nice copy. Probably the most famous of Jules Verne's novels.

Le Tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours (Around the World in Eighty Days) is an adventure novel. The novel tells the story of the English gentleman Phileas Fogg's race around the word, who made a bet that he could achieve it in eighty days. He is accompanied by Jean Passepartout, his French servant. The whole novel mixes travel writing (traditional for Jules Verne) and scientific facts such as those used for the plot twist of the novel.
Le Docteur Ox (Doctor Ox) is a collection of 5 short stories from Jules Verne's youth.

Volume very lightly warped, small brown foxing at the top of the plate of the first board. Scattered foxing and a tear to the top margin of page 63, original endpapers marginally faded as is often the case.
Un capitaine de quinze ans is an adventure novel essentially dedicated to the issue of slavery, and more precisely the trade of African slaves by other Africans.

Original blue endpapers marginally shaded as is usual, turn-ins of the second board completely split, those of the first board are split at the top. A very small trace of pen on the second board. Top spine-end slightly rubbed.
De la Terre à la Lune, trajet direct en 97 heures 20 minutes is a novel of anticipation. It relates how, after the end of the Civil War, an association of artillerymen and scientists linked to the military industry attempt to send a shell manned by three men to the moon. De la terre à la lune is the first part of a diptych, which ends with Autour de la Lune.
A beautiful copy.

Le Sphinx des glaces is a fantasy novel, which is intended as a sequel to the novel by Edgar Poe - to whom it is dedicated -, Les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym, published in 1838.

Beautiful first plate, corners very lightly folded including a little rubbing. Very good spine with clear golds, the spine-ends a little sagging with a small tear the length of the joint. Second board in beautiful condition with 2 marks. A trace of a very pale water stain in the margin of the first 10 leaves fading away. Overall, rather clean but some leaves with scattered browning.
A beautiful copy.

Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) is an adventure novel conceived following an epistolary suggestion from George Sand, friend of Hetzel, who greatly appreciated Cinq semaines en ballon (Five Weeks in a Balloon) and Voyage au centre de la Terre (Journey to the Centre of the Earth).
The rarest of the boards for this title.

New edition adorned with 44 drawings by L. Benett and a map. It is only in 1907 that the insert illustrations appeared for this title. Catalogue BC in-fine.

Spine very lightly faded, gold on the interior of the badge on the first board a little faded, two lower corners flattened. A loose section, a corner piece missing skillfully filled on the title page and a marginal restoration of the paper on page 33.
Le Rayon vert (The Green Ray) is a sentimental novel inspired by the Scottish legend of the eponymous phenomenon: it allows those who have observed it to see clearly in their hearts as well as in those of others.

Altogether very fresh; a few pale spots to margins. Light cracks to inside joints, without damaging the working of the binding, the book being solid and intact. Small marginal tear of 1 cm to p. 410.
A fine copy, in rare condition.
Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea is an adventure book conceived on the basis of a suggestion in a letter from George Sand, a friend of Hetzel's, who had very much liked Five Weeks in a Balloon and Voyage to the Center of the Earth.
