Edition illustrated with 111 drawings by Neuville and Riou engraved by Hildibrand. Catalogue GU in-fine. Hetzel publisher's board signed A. Lenègre with “a pasted portrait”, spine with a lighthouse lightly faded, Lenègre type “e” second board according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Bottom spine-end and corners very skillfully restored. Some very minor foxing at the beginning and end of the volume, as usual. Vingt mille lieues sous les mers (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) is an adventure novel conceived following an epistolary suggestion from George Sand, friend of Hetzel, who greatly appreciated Cinq semaines en ballon (Five Weeks in a Balloon) and Voyage au centre de la Terre (Journey to the Centre of the Earth). The rarest of the boards for this title.
