First edition of the French translation established by Jean-Jacques Moulinié, the only translation authorized by Charles Darwin during his lifetime. Indeed, the first French translation by Clémence-Auguste Royer published in 1862 by Guillaumin & Cie and Victor Masson & fils was denounced by Charles Darwin. This important 1873 edition is also augmented with a chapter as well as notes and additions by the author. Publisher's binding in full green cloth, smooth spine, gilt friezes at head and foot, headcaps slightly depressed, blind fillet frame to covers, corners slightly bumped, grey paper endpapers and pastedowns. Some minor foxing without gravity, work illustrated with a folding plate. Rare and handsome copy of one of the most important scientific texts of the 19th century and the only edition authorized by Charles Darwin during his lifetime.
