First edition large octavo illustrated with 68 drawings by George Roux as well as 2 maps. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel known as "au globe doré" type 3, lighthouse spine, second cover type Engel "h" according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Publisher's BH catalogue at end. Volume very slightly warped, spine lightly stained, some small losses of gilt on the plate. Original blue endpapers very marginally lightened as usual. Plate from page 249 detached, some foxing. Seconde patrie is a robinsonade. A great admirer of the novel Le Robinson suisse written in 1812 by the Swiss-German pastor Johann David Wyss, Jules Verne imagines a sequel to the adventures of the Zermatt family.
