Illustrated by Willy Pogány with twenty-four mounted colour plates. Decorative ornaments and borders printed in colour. The first edition illustrated by Pogány appeared in 1909, but the work was subsequently reprinted many times without date, in various bindings and with a varying number of plates. Some of these later printings likewise contain twenty-four plates and bear the same printer’s imprint (Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd), so that the date of this copy cannot be established with certainty.
Publisher’s full olive sheep, slightly faded at the edges, upper cover with blind-stamped fillet border and vine-leaf and grape-cluster motif, flat spine with gilt title and author’s name, illustrated pastedowns. Rubbing and soiling to binding, lower corners of three leaves creased in the margin, small marginal corner loss and small tear to two other leaves, not affecting text or plates.
