First edition large octavo illustrated with 64 drawings by Roux including 12 polychrome hors-texte engravings with blank verso. Hetzel publisher's binding signed Engel called "à l'éventail et à un éléphant avec titre dans l'éventail", lighthouse spine, first board with gilt scientific instruments in foreground, three gilt illustrations and green foliage, second board of Engel type "i" according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Spine slightly faded, a few discreet surface scratches on second board, original blue endpapers marginally discolored as usual, corners imperceptibly bumped, scratches above the medallion. A posthumous novel, Le Volcan d'or takes place during the gold rush period and features two Franco-Canadian cousins inheriting a claim on the banks of the Klondike.
