First edition large octavo illustrated with 64 drawings by Roux including 12 polychrome hors-texte engravings with blank verso. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel known as "à l'éventail et à un éléphant avec titre dans l'éventail", spine with lighthouse, first cover with gilt scientific instruments in foreground, three gilt illustrations and green foliage, second cover of Engel "i" type according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Light rubbing to one joint, some discreet surface wear to second cover. Original blue endpapers marginally lightened as usual, corners very slightly bumped. Posthumous novel, Le Volcan d'or takes place during the gold rush period and features two Franco-Canadian cousins inheriting a concession on the banks of the Klondike. Handsome copy.
