First illustrated edition in color with 51 hand-colored plates on heavy paper under tissue guards and numerous black illustrations in the text. The first edition of 1845 was only in black.
Contemporary half cherry red shagreen binding with corners. Spine with false raised bands decorated with compartments with thick blind fillets and gilt fillets. Gilt title. Thick blind and gilt fillets on boards. Top edge gilt. Some scattered foxing. Minor rubbing. A small hole in the lower margin of the title page.
