First edition large octavo illustrated with 78 illustrations and 12 chromotypographic plates by George Roux and 2 colored maps. Publisher's Hetzel binding "au portrait collé" in full red cloth signed A. Lenègre, polychrome first cover signed Souze depicting various means of locomotion (balloon, locomotive, ships), a sepia-toned portrait of the author mounted at center, various navigation instruments heightened in gold in the foreground, second cover type "e" as indicated by Jauzac, spine decorated with several illustrations in color and gold, original blue endpapers, all edges gilt. HF catalogue at rear. Spine very lightly darkened, corners slightly bumped, some minor foxing. Maritime adventures recounting a treasure hunt, taking the hero from Tunisia to the Gulf of Guinea, then to Scotland, to Spitzberg Island, and finally to Sicily.
