First large octavo edition illustrated with chromolithographic plates by George Roux. Publisher's Hetzel binding "with mounted portrait" in full red percaline signed A. Lenègre, front cover polychrome signed Souze depicting various means of locomotion (balloon, locomotive, boats), a sepia-toned portrait of the author mounted at center, various navigation instruments heightened in gold in foreground, rear cover type "e" as indicated by Jauzac, spine decorated with several illustrations in color and gold, original blue endpapers, all edges gilt. Catalogue D at rear. Spine somewhat faded and one corner of front cover slightly pushed in. Some foxing mainly at end of volume, otherwise a handsome copy. Hector Servadac is an adventure novel where the author extrapolates from a hypothesis the encounter of Earth with a comet and the consequences both most unexpected and most rigorously logical of the situation thus created.
