Publisher's Hetzel binding "à l'éventail et à l'éléphant" in full red cloth signed Engel, front board polychrome signed Engel presenting the title in the black and gilt fan, several black and gilt frames, a gilt elephant head at top left, three small illustrations as well as various gilt navigation and exploration instruments, all framed within green foliage, second board type "i" as indicated by Jauzac, spine with lighthouse decorated with several color and gilt illustrations, original blue endpapers, all edges gilt. Head slightly sunken, corners slightly twisted, some light foxing at beginning of volume, trace of label at head of one blue endpaper. Five Weeks in a Balloon is Jules Verne's first novel published by Hetzel and tells of the exploration of the African continent then incompletely known to Europeans. Journey to the Center of the Earth narrates the discovery of an ancient runic manuscript by a German scholar and his nephew; they undertake a journey toward the center of the Earth by entering through a dormant Icelandic volcano.
