Essential memoirs for understanding the Empire according to Tulard. Mollien was Minister of the Treasury from the Consulate to the end of the Empire. His memoirs are particularly concerned with details and precision. In the preface, Mollien admits his preference for Adam Smith's school over his own (Mollien spent 5 years in England studying finance after being dismissed and imprisoned during the Terror). He notably created the Court of Auditors. The work begins with an analysis of France's financial situation under Louis XVI, up to Bonaparte's rise. The tax system was consolidated under Napoleon, notably as consequences of the Empire's multiple wars. The memoirs contain numerous letters between the minister and his sovereign. The author thus presents an unprecedented economic and financial portrait of France under the Empire.

The author, one of Napoleon's advisors for ten years, seeks in this work to draw the true portrait of the emperor, to scrutinize, behind the appearance of things, the true motivations and the true character of Napoleon Bonaparte. The author unmasks the false legends, understanding that the prodigious faculty of embracing everything has its reverse side, that of never delving deeply into anything; portrait of a man whose obsession and principal desire were to subject the world to his domination, who discoursed incessantly to seduce and captivate his entourage, and for whom men were never anything more than servants to his cause. This vitriolic portrait, thoughtful, true writer's work, does not fall into complacency and facile criticism.
Dominique de Pradt was accused by the emperor of having made him miss Europe during the Polish embassy, which was to be the last rampart before the fall of Russia. Moreover, the work has the merit of discovering ignored points of history, in its desire to determine Napoleon's system and thoughts, notably to exclude England from Europe and to confine Russia to its northern position.

First French edition, rare, the first edition having appeared in London in 1801. 33 double pages heightened in colors, being 22 maps (sometimes two per page) published in 8 parts of 4 maps or charts between 1802 and 1826 (Quérard). Edition published under the pseudonym A. Lesage.

Quérard, in his France littéraire, reports regarding this work that it would not truly be the work of Las Cases but of an English or Irish clergyman who would have sold his work to the latter who would have published it upon his return to France; in any case this world atlas (map of Asia, Oceania, America) is a compilation, the maps naturally not being by Las Cases, and the author drew from various works to compose his own. This atlas was reprinted several times and continued, but although provided with more maps (which one could purchase additionally), these reissues no longer concern exclusively the world under the Empire and are therefore less specific. The geopolitical Europe of 1802/1804 is not the same as that of 1822 or 1831, and it is the same for the United States. Besides the maps of the five continents, one can distinguish a map of ancient Greece, of the Roman world...

The commission of agriculture and arts was founded in 1794 and Parmentier was from its creation an eminent and influential member. The potato was soon perceived, thanks to Parmentier, as a means to combat famine and food shortages, whether for humans or animals.

Without prejudice for the period, and judging things essentially as a naturalist, observing and comparing facts to his knowledge, this history of woman, not only through history but according to nations (the Hottentots are often studied) is fascinating in more ways than one, notably because the author never falls into pure naturalism but always questions the relationship of a fact to all the components of the feminine being, components as much social, vestimentary, cultural as traditional and physical. The hygiene treatise forming the third volume is a physiological treatise, Moreau analyzing the consequences of this physiology on behavior, sensitivity and feminine particularities.

The Meqyâs is the famous nilometer located on the island of Roudah. The work begins with a history of travellers in Egypt and the interest that can be found in reading these voyages. It goes without saying that all authors condemn Napoleon Bonaparte without reservation in the strongest terms.
