Separated from his wife Madeleine at the end of the 1960s, André Malraux formed a second relationship with the writer Louise de Vilmorin and moved with her to the Château de Vilmorin in Verrières-le-Buisson. After her death on December 26, 1969, André Malraux continued to live at the château with Louise's niece, Sophie de Vilmorin, who became his final companion and cared for him until his death on November 23, 1976.
