Father François de Ligny, of the Society of Jesus created this paraphrase on the life of Jesus based on the Gospels, and ancient texts, adding his reflections and commentaries.

These famous letters were addressed to Jenny (Jeanne Françoise) Dacquin from 1841 to 1870, the last of which was written two hours before the author's death. Hippolyte Taine's preface constitutes one of the first and best testimonials about the writer. While Mérimée complained of being unable to devote time to a true work, he unknowingly conceived his ultimate masterpiece with this collection of letters.

Painter, engraver and illustrator, Alexandre Lunois remained renowned for his color lithographic washes. To interpret his own drawings, he employs an almost forgotten process, treating the stone with a brush dipped in lithographic ink, in other words like a wash. The textures, nuances, color contrasts obtained distinguish his style. The result is a contrasted and violent style, which perfectly illustrates orientalism, as seen in Fortunio, a true painter's book and one of his major productions. He delights in giving different states of his engravings whose deep blacks are remarkable. About an orientalist plate, Edmond de Goncourt notes in his journal: "A very remarkable plate is a lithograph by Lunois entitled Danseuses espagnoles dans la danse. A plate of the greatest character escaping Japanese imitation through the intensity of tones, the raw blue of the background, the yellow, the frank red, the blacks of nocturnal shadow in full figure."

Les Iambes initially appeared in 1832 and remains the author's best-known collection, which made him immediately famous and made him the spokesman for the July 1830 Revolution, and one of the essential figures of Romanticism. "This collection ranks him among the greatest combat poets between Agrippa d'Aubigné and Victor Hugo" (Laffont-Bompiani, Dictionnaire des Oeuvres). Hugo said he found in Iambes "astonishing verses that no one else will ever write again" and Baudelaire that he was "naturally a poet and a great poet." The series of poems on social misery, Lazare, which completes the work is one of Barbier's greatest successes and makes the entire collection the most important published by the author, in an inspiration that the poet, for many critics, would never surpass again.

Among the numerous subjects treated, one will find chronophotography, color reproduction, skies in photography, The pilgrimage to Mecca (very beautiful heliogravure plate outside the text of the grand çalat ceremony)... "We believe we are advancing progress by interesting the public even more in this entirely French discovery of Photography..." ["Nous pensons faire oeuvre de progrès en intéressant encore davantage le public à cette découverte toute française de la Photographie..."]. Thus Paul Nadar concluded his introduction as presentation of this precious review, containing a print by the celebrated photographer in each issue. At the origin of the creation of Paris-photographe, P. Nadar explains the absence of a luxury photography review in France, contrary to the magnificent foreign publications.
Some rare and minimal marginal dampstains and small tears of no consequence, otherwise very handsome uncut copies forming a set of remarkable rarity.
