The work begins with memoirs on the life and works of Mengs (1728-1779) by Chevalier d'Azara and a notice on Mengs's paintings, followed by the painter's treatises on painting, covering beauty, taste, technical aspects of painting as well as various celebrated painters (Raphael, Correggio, Titian). The preface contains a paragraph by Klopstock (the German editor) and Fuessli. Court painter to the King of Poland, he joined the Spanish court at the behest of Charles III, King of Spain; his paintings, quite early in the neoclassical taste (see his Cleopatra), secured him fame and wealth, and the writings he left on painting and the arts are marked by research and subtlety.

Bernard de Girard (1535-1610) was born and died in Bordeaux, after having been secretary to François de Noailles and having made himself known as a poet and historian, he was appointed by Charles IX in 1571 as historiographer of France, then genealogist of the order of the Holy Spirit by Henri III. He was the first French writer to have composed a body of national history, and if he adopted certain fables, he rejected numerous generally accepted traditions.

Gabriel Naudé (1600-1653) was born in Paris. He was a physician but more of a philosopher as he had also studied literature and philosophy; of all his books, the apology is the only one that remains to us. He was successively attached to Cardinal Barberini, to Cardinal Mazarin (he was responsible for collecting the works for Mazarin's library), to Cardinal Richelieu then to Queen Christina, also as librarian, apart from the famous 'Advis pour dresser une bibliothèque'. He is an heir to humanism who advocates a return to strict rationalism; this work is its application, establishing that one must exercise judgment and study causes and effects before condemning. One finds much precious information on the accusations and practices of numerous men, Galen, Raymond Lull, Albertus Magnus, Saint Thomas Aquinas, along with a defense of the accusations that were brought against these men. Naudé dismantles beliefs about demons, the philosopher's stone and what they encompass.

He received command of the Army of Italy, helped Bonaparte in the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire, then allied with conspirators against Napoleon whose growing power worried him. Found guilty, Napoleon banished him from France.
