First edition. Contemporary full calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands, red morocco title-label. One corner slightly bumped and one border worn over one centimeter. A third of the title-label is missing. Book recased. This is the first treatise of this kind on dyeing wool and the most important work by the author, Jean Hellot (1685-1766), a renowned analytical chemist and industrial chemist. This is a practical treatise that details preparations and discusses techniques, and as such had enormous success in Europe where it was applied everywhere. Hellot was appointed inspector general of the kingdom's dye works in 1740 and this treatise appears to be the result of his observations. Similarly, he was later appointed to the Vincennes porcelain factory where he invented the formula for turquoise blue (Hellot blue) used for the first service commissioned by Louis XV.
