The History of the Arabs contains an interesting historical prologue on Muhammad's genealogy and a chronological table of the Caliphs, descendants of the Prophet and emperors of Constantinople until 1261. The caliphate was instituted after the Prophet's death. The title of caliph (khalifa) or "successor of the Prophet," having quickly been attributed to the head of the Muslim community, was originally coupled with those of emir al-mouminin, "commander of the faithful," and imam. The Caliphs established the greatest dynasties such as the Umayyads, the Caliphs of Córdoba, the Abbasids... whose history is both that of Muslims and of Islam. This history extends from 629 to the capture of Baghdad by the Tartars. Chadenat #1818 "highly esteemed work".
