First edition. Contemporary glazed brown full calf binding. Decorated spine with raised bands, red morocco title label. One corner slightly bumped. Tail headcap and lower edge restored, as well as headbands. A small tear with slight loss below the title label. Scuffing to boards. This is the first treatise of its kind on dyeing wool and the most important work by the author, Jean Hellot (1685-1766), a renowned analytical chemist and industrial chemist. It is a practical treatise that details preparations and discusses techniques, and consequently enjoyed enormous success throughout Europe where it was widely applied. Hellot was appointed inspector general of the kingdom's dyeworks in 1740, and this treatise appears to be the result of his observations. Similarly, he was later appointed to the Vincennes porcelain manufactory where he invented the formula for turquoise blue (Hellot blue) used for the first service commissioned by Louis XV. Manuscript gift inscription: "Bourgoin le cadet illustre teinturier à Gaudrecourt le châtaux parisien Bravure..."
