Autograph letter signed by Gustave Flaubert addressed to the archaeologist Charles-Ernest Beulé. Two pages written in black ink on a folded sheet. The recipient of this letter added nine handwritten lines, a draft of his future response, following Flaubert's letter.
This letter has been transcribed and reproduced on the website of the Flaubert Centre at the University of Rouen. The transcriber of this missive notes: "Are the lines written under the signature by Beulé or by Flaubert himself? The handwriting resembles his. Stéphanie Dord-Crouslé suggests that Flaubert may have gone to see Beulé and written these elements under his dictation in response to the questions posed." This hypothesis seems unlikely to us given that we know Charles-Ernest Beulé's response to this letter, itself digitized by the Flaubert Centre and dated February 10, 1860. This response does not seem to us to suggest a visit by Flaubert to Beulé. It seems more likely to us that Beulé inscribed under Flaubert's letter a draft of his future response of February 10, 1860, which would only be an elegant reformulation of his notes.
Handsome and important testimony to the colossal research that Flaubert undertook for the writing of Salammbô.
"Begun in 1857, the novel appeared in 1862, a period when Antiquity was coming back into fashion and when Carthage was 'au goût du jour' ["in vogue"] thanks to the recent excavations by Charles-Etienne Beulé at Byrsa (1859) and in the Punic ports." (Vanessa Padioleau, "Flaubert et Carthage : Salammbô, roman polymorphe" ["Flaubert and Carthage: Salammbô, polymorphic novel"] in Revue Flaubert, n° 9, 2009) It is therefore to one of the specialists on the subject that Flaubert addresses his questions, commenting on his recent reading of Ammianus Marcellinus: "J'ai appris, dans ce même Ammien, que les Carthaginois ont pris Thèbes, en Egypte [...] Qu'est-ce que cela veut dire ? Ce passage est, je crois, peu connu ?" ["I learned, in this same Ammianus, that the Carthaginians took Thebes, in Egypt [...] What does this mean? This passage is, I believe, little known?"] Flaubert's task is no small one: at the time, nothing or almost nothing was known about the period of the Mercenary Revolt which extended over two years, from 240 to 238 BC. He then begins painstaking work, basing his research on the texts of the great historians of Antiquity which he reads in Latin in the original. The letter we offer shows his great mastery of it: "J'ai appris, dans ce même Ammien que les Carthaginois ont pris Thèbes, en Egypte, livr[e] xvii, ch. iv. 'Hanc inter exordia pandentis se late Carthaginis, improviso excursu duces oppressere Poenorum'" ["I learned, in this same Ammianus that the Carthaginians took Thebes, in Egypt, book xvii, ch. iv. 'At the time when Carthage was beginning its wide expansion, the generals of the Phoenicians conquered it by a surprise attack'"].
Despite this most thorough research, the gate of Carthage would receive only a very brief description in the final version of Salammbô.

Fine and long letter in which Jean Cocteau defends his friend the Ukrainian conductor and composer Igor Markevitch, victim of critic Antoine Goléa's wrath.
"Je suis stupéfait par ce qu'on me rapporte de Goléa." ["I am stunned by what I am told about Goléa."] We have not been able to find the slightest trace of an article by Goléa about Markevitch, but the University of Caen holds a file entitled "Affaire entre Igor Markevitch et Antoine Goléa" ["Case between Igor Markevitch and Antoine Goléa"] dated from the year of our letter. It appears indeed, according to these archives, that a trial did take place and that the appeal was requested by Goléa in October 1955; Cocteau comments on this subject: "J'ai toujours été la victime de ces étranges procès qu'on gagne en appel - mais bien à la longue - et parfois après sa mort." ["I have always been the victim of these strange trials that one wins on appeal - but only in the long run - and sometimes after one's death."]
Jean Cocteau, whose handwriting appears tormented here, seems in any case to have been very affected by this affair and praises his friend's talent: "Ta prodigieuse maîtrise et le sacrifice que tu as fait de ton œuvre au service de celles des autres. [...] il est incompréhensible qu'un esprit de sa culture ne reconnaisse pas, entre autres, que personne au monde ne conduit ce Sacre comme toi." ["Your prodigious mastery and the sacrifice you have made of your work in service to those of others. [...] it is incomprehensible that a mind of his culture does not recognize, among other things, that no one in the world conducts this Rite like you."] More than a letter of support, this document is a true plea in favor of artists' creative freedom and a condemnation of cultural mercantilism: "Mais a-t-il pensé que nos œuvres dès qu'elles passent par un éditeur, une salle de concert, une salle d'exposition, deviennent des produits ? [...] Hélas, nos professions ne comportent pas de « diplômes » et nous courons le risque de professions libres. Notre seule chance est que le public se trouve rarement d'accord avec ses juges." ["But has he thought that our works, as soon as they pass through a publisher, a concert hall, an exhibition hall, become products? [...] Alas, our professions do not include 'diplomas' and we run the risk of liberal professions. Our only chance is that the public is rarely in agreement with its judges."] At this time cultural professions were indeed quite poorly regulated and it would not be until 1959 and the creation of the Ministry for Art and Culture by De Gaulle and Malraux that things would evolve. Cocteau finally deplores that criticism guides the choice of "consumers": "Déconseiller ces « produits » revient à leur causer le plus grand dommage." ["To advise against these 'products' amounts to causing them the greatest damage."]

Autograph letter signed addressed to a correspondent whom we have not been able to identify. Written from the Grand Hôtel de Grandcamp-les-Bains (Calvados) in blue ink on a folded sheet of white paper.
A transverse fold inherent to the posting of the letter and four small perforations affecting the text but not impeding its reading.
The mention of Grandcamp-les-Bains - where Aragon seems to have been only once during the summer of his seventeenth year - and the signature - of an early form - lead us to think that the letter could have been written in the summer of 1914. Philippe Forest, in his biography of Aragon, confirms that it was indeed at Grandcamp-les-Bains, where his family had rented fifty rooms in a large seaside hotel to accommodate family and friends, that the future poet learned the news of mobilization.
The handwriting, less rounded than on manuscripts prior to the 1920s, however seems to us later and we are therefore not in a position to confirm the date of 1914.

Foundational work of sexology, in which Psychopathia describes for the first time in a clinical and scientific manner the various sexual anomalies (sadism, masochism, fetishism, zoophilia...). Freud, who regularly received inscribed copies of Krafft-Ebing's works, owned the 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th editions of Psychopathia Sexualis, precious sources of information in the exchange and cross-pollination of ideas that animated researchers of that era in the field. Krafft-Ebbing, a psychiatrist teaching at the University of Vienna, deliberately gave his work a Latin medical title to discourage the merely curious.

Le Village aérien is a fantasy and adventure novel set in the African jungle. Two white explorers accompanied by a native and a black child discover an unknown tribe living in the trees. The perspective of geopolitical evolution of the territories where the plot unfolds allows us to understand the evolutionist debate raging in the 19^th century.
Les Histoires de Jean-Marie Cabidoulin relates the adventures of the Saint-Enoch, a whaler leaving Le Havre bound for the Pacific Ocean. Among the crew, an old pessimistic sailor constantly tells his companions the most frightful stories about the ocean and its monsters. Then mysterious events occur, becoming increasingly frequent.

The engravings illustrate the different stages of the journey: Tharandt, Nuremberg, Munich, Füssen, Grisons...

This manuscript, which is full of details about life at the time in these countries is the work of Jules Malignon, professor of French at the Blochmann Institute in Dresden, and was produced on the occasion of a trip, whose participants are listed at the beginning of the volume.
The engineer and entrepreneur Rudolf Sigismond Blochmann, founder of the Dresden institute founded in 1828 and bearing his name, was one of the pioneers of gas lighting in Germany.

The illustration contains 58 compositions by François Thévenot engraved on wood by A. Romagnol, a frontispiece portrait, 7 plates and 47 in-text compositions. Limited to 300 numbered copies, one of 40 copies on handmade laid paper additionally containing a separate suite on China paper of the illustrations and a triple suite of the plates (2 of which on China paper). The portrait of Maupassant is also printed in 3 states, 2 of which on China paper.
Contemporary half tawny marbled calf binding with corners signed at the top of the first endpaper Baillot. Spine with 4 raised bands decorated with romantic tools, roulette at foot, fillets. Gilt title. Top edge gilt. Covers and spine preserved. The tissue guards, reduced in size compared to the leaves, have created on the laid paper an occasionally browned border. Apart from this minor flaw, a very fresh copy. Surface wear along the upper joint, the leather being exposed without glaze. 3 small chips on the spine and along the lower joint due to surface wear, the glaze having disappeared in these spots. Perfect freshness of the paper.

Maurice Audin, French mathematician and member of the Algerian Communist Party, was arrested during the Battle of Algiers on June 11, 1957 and disappeared without his body ever being found.
The French army claiming that he had escaped, some personalities including Pierre Vidal-Naquet protested and denounced his martyrdom after he was certainly tortured by the French army, General Aussaresses acknowledging much later having given the order to kill Maurice Audin.

Publisher's advertising slip printed on green paper for the first edition of "Le Bétrou" published in the Cahiers du Collège de Pataphysique in 1983.
One of the rare literary hoaxes whose true author has not yet been officially revealed. The works of Julien Torma, alleged Surrealist writer who died in 1933, were revealed by the Collège de Pataphysique. But when Henri Béhar attempted to attribute these works to some Pataphysicians such as Noël Arnaud, Eugène Ionesco, Jacques Prévert, Boris Vian or Raymond Queneau, the latter replied: "... I can assure you that I had nothing to do with the creation of the character of Torma. No more, moreover, than the other authors you mention (with the exception perhaps of just one). Torma is not the creation of simple satraps. I will say no more."
In reality it was Emmanuel Peillet, Pataphysician writer, whose identity was revealed by some very rare documents including two letters to Jacques Bonnefoy, described by Claude Oterelo:
"In these two letters written in green ink, one being signed E, Emmanuel Peillet proposes to Jacques Bonnefoy - who would help him - a strategy to mystify certain publishers by indicating codes in a meticulous and secret manner so that no one could suspect the identity of Julien Torma, mythical character created by Emmanuel Peillet. Tuesday May 20th at 2 o'clock 125 Emmanuel Peillet decides to mystify Marc Barbezat publisher of l'Arbalète for this he agrees on a code with Jacques Bonnefoy "...I me you us congratulate and we you congratulate on your happy Barbezanian initiative which must be exploited to the full. Also without even waiting for your missive and so as not to let your sacred fire cool I send you instructions from the holy trinity. First as information note an interesting quotation in an article from les Taons Modernes (by Monsieur J. Pouillon, profane but sympathetic)..." "Second it remains for Monsieur B. to play Léon Vanier. Berthier sur le Matérialisme by Abbé Coyer. Originally, Marc-Michel Rey had an editorial project with Diderot for his works, but this project was aborted. Multiple paginations, each text having its own pagination and table of contents.
