Le Chancellor, initially published in 1874 is a maritime adventure novel inspired by the raft of the medusa. Martin Paz is set in Peru. One of Verne's only titles dealing with discourse on races and hatred of mixed race, the hero being an Indian in love with a Jewish woman.

The first volume contains the Odes and Epodes and the second the Satires, Epistles and Ars Poetica. Michel de Marolles was an indefatigable translator who made available to the general public the works of Antiquity. His bilingual, critical and annotated editions ensured his success. While they earned him criticism from his peers for the accuracy of his translation and notes, they successfully ensured the penetration into culture of Greek and Latin works through the excellence of the editions.

Interesting collection comprising 63 pieces, mostly relating to the bull Unigenitus, along with occasional pieces: an Ode to the King of 1744, a Eulogy of Mignard to Le Brun, the Ceremony and Consecration of the Church of Saint-Sulpice, a mazarinade, Gacon’s Nouvelle satire contre les femme, medical writings such as the Abrégé de l'hopital des enfans-trouvés. The first volume has been extra-illustrated with a cartouche of Babel serving as a frontispiece, repeated in the second volume.

This is a presentation and interpretation of the funerary stele of centurion Manilius Quintus Cordus (1st century BC) by philologist Alessandro Nigri which is now in the Bologna museum. The author cites other inscriptions including three relating to taurobolia (bull sacrifices).
Our copy is presented in original wrappers, under plain ivory paper covers with small marginal tears and a crease mark. Light and pale dampstaining throughout the volume in the upper margin.

Since the 16th century, there had always been a man as head of the House of Austria, and succession had been transmitted from male to male, but Emperor Charles VI had only daughters. He wanted to leave his inheritance to his eldest daughter, Marie-Thérèse, and regulated his succession by means of a solemn law, called the Pragmatic Sanction. This act decided that Marie-Thérèse would succeed her father. To be sure it would be executed, Charles VI had it recognized first by members of his family, then by his subjects of the different provinces. The Pragmatic then became the fundamental law of succession of the Austrian monarchy. It established the right of women to succeed and made the territory indivisible, as long as there would remain descendants of Marie-Thérèse. It is on this act that the existence of the Austrian monarchy still rests today. At the death of Charles VI (1740), Marie-Thérèse was recognized as heiress by all the countries of the Austrian monarchy. But the sovereigns of Europe did not allow themselves to be stopped by the treaties they had signed, it was a European war, each working to dismember Austria. The work evokes a poor interpretation of Emperor Ferdinand's testament regarding the succession of the House of Austria.
Our copy is presented under original stitching and under contemporary marbled paper covers. The leaves are folded at the upper right margin. The cover shows creases and lacks.

Rare first edition, absent from libraries.
The canonicate is synonymous with canonry. Canon De Lagrange wanted to obtain the benefits of his function, but since his canonicate was ad effectum he could not obtain the benefits from it. The canonicate ad effectum is in fact only the spiritual and not temporal charge of the canonicate, that is to say which does not allow one to obtain a prebend. Formerly, the pope appointed canons in newly created parishes that did not yet have temporal revenue, but the Council of Trent abolished these prerogatives. Lagrange's clever strategy is that his work on the delicate question of the canonicate ad effectum might help him in his projects (lighten his exile, intervene with the king and recover the money invested in justice), and it is only after a long dissertation that he will come to expose his case, and finally the object of the work. Convinced of the legitimacy of his position (to obtain the benefits linked to his charge), the author asked justice to rule on his affair, which is why he was exiled from Tarbes. It seems very likely that the author had this text printed himself with the aim of sending it to the competent authorities, perhaps the pope, which would explain why no copy is found in libraries. At the end of the text, last page, manuscript gift inscription: Delagrange chanoine de Tarbes ["Delagrange canon of Tarbes"].

The imperial decree, which took place during the Hundred Days, concerns a softening of the taxation regime for beverages. The pamphlet contains all the articles that regulate behaviors related to beverages: harvests, unions, entry duties, storage, license tariffs for brewers and others...

This dissertation originated from three complaints filed against the general assembly of the clergy of France in 1765: the first and most important was the falsification of a text by Saint Paul. In support of the text of Saint Paul employed, there is at the end of this first part a precious bibliography of texts by Saint Paul and the Bible; the second complaint was the singular citation of a word from Malachi and the third was the accusation of having used a false word of Jesus Christ. The defense and justification regarding the first grievance occupy 3/4 of the work. The book was written by Monseigneur bishop of Grenoble.
The work, presented in original wrappers and without covers, was doubtless removed from a binding that contained several books.

The corsair Le Spartiate gave chase to two vessels flying American flags, the Charles and the Mary; the ships were brought back to port and their cargo confiscated. The Bordeaux tribunal, compliant in the matter, declared the cargo of both ships lawful prize, invoking dubious reasons even though America was in no way numbered among France's enemies, thus permitting the chase and seizure of the ships' goods. The captains were Irish, which provided material for the defense.
Our copy, presented in wrappers without covers, was apparently removed from a binding.
