Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

NationalityFrance
Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850) was a major French novelist of the nineteenth century and the creator of the monumental cycle La Comédie humaine. Through detailed observation of social classes, economic forces, and human ambition, he reshaped the realist novel. His interconnected narratives form a coherent portrayal of French society after the Revolution. Balzac’s work profoundly influenced European literature, particularly the realist and naturalist traditions.

Balzac portraitist starves during the Paris Commune - autograph letter signed

    s. n.|Paris 20 floréal an 79 19 mai [19 mai 1871?]|13 x 20.5 cm|3 pages sur un bifeuillet

Autograph letter signed and dated "20 floréal year 79 19 May" [19 May 1871?], 3 pages on a bifolium of blue paper. Small lack of paper affecting a few letters, usual folds from mailing.

Rare letter by painter and illustrator Gérard-Séguin, known for his portrait of Honoré de Balzac (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Tours). Written in the midst of the Paris Commune, as famine and fighting ravaged the capital, the artist delivers a desperate yet spirited plea from the artist.

This letter is one of the few surviving manuscripts by Gérard-Séguin whose biography remains largely unknown: "Little is known about the life and work of Jean...

Balzac collects paintings - autograph letter signed

    Bâle [Basel] 18 mai [1846]|13.6 x 21.8 cm|2 pages sur un feuillet

Autograph letter signed by Honoré de Balzac to Gustave Silbermann, dated 18 May [1846], with the blind stamp of the Hôtel des Trois Rois in Basel. A delicate document, with fold marks that have caused some tears with some minute lacks of paper, affecting a few letters, including the last two letters of the author's signature.
A fine epistolary testament to Balzac's unrestrained passion for art collecting, in this likely unpublished letter addressed to his friend, the Strasbourg bookseller and printer Gustave Silbermann. Balzac was planning a stay in Strasbourg, during which he became engaged to Madame Hanska.

Moreover, Hetzel's publisher's preface, usually absent, is present here before the prologue. Most copies begin directly with the prologue. The frontispiece of volume 1 has been placed facing p. 32, the engraved half-title entitled Scène de moeurs serving as frontispiece; this half-title is often absent from most copies.
