    The philosopher Louis Rougier discusses his latest work: "Monsieur J.C. La moindre courtoisie était de vous adresser cet ouvrage, ce que je viens de faire." (Mr. J.C.     Autograph letter dated by Jacques Chardonne and signed with his initials to literary critic and novelist Jacques Brenner, 52 lines in black ink on a single leaf recto verso regarding the worlds of publishing and literature mired in an overly capitalist vision.
    Mailing fold as expected.
    For Jacques Chardonne, capitalism rests not on money but on men: "Money is nothing; it gives nothing, saves nothing, it's the barometer, that's all. Everything rests on men... [...] this is very clear in publishing. Le Mercure is a good example (Charpentier likewise; all the 'literary' publishers, for that matter.") ... Do reserves of publishers exist, when they are lacking in a house? (Charpentier was a 'publisher'; the Fasquelles were nothing); similarly Arthème Fayard was a publisher; his successors nothing."... "One can pour capital (which is what we do today) into a house without a 'publisher' and without authors; it's like pissing on sand".
    Jacques Chardonne also attacks a consolation prize that displeases him because of its political connotation (the exploitation of misfortune): "I thought that the 'consolation prize' was a figure of speech: I had no idea that she was really poor... [...] what I don't much like about this prize is the political background; the exploitation of misfortune. This has gone on long enough."
    He also sharply criticizes certain people like Pierre Dumayet: "You can't imagine Dumayet's behavior.     If a nice little lady sings on television quite often, it's because she agreed to see him! I know one who fled (I had recommended her to Dumayet) immediately." or Roger Nimier: "I read Boisdeffre's article on 'five years before'. He's right. One feels the emptiness of Roger Nimier; about which he had no illusions... He only wrote one good book, one of the very first: 'Un grand d'Espagne'. All this is only more tragic."
    The author of Destinées sentimentales concludes his letter with this peremptory impression: "Perhaps the best book of this hollow era (except for journalists) is 'Histoire d'O' (don't mention it at the Academy).

    Bound in half red morocco-grained shagreen with corners, spine with five raised bands set with black fillets, some very light traces of rubbing on spine, date and place gilt at foot, marbled paper boards, endpapers and pastedowns of moiré-effect and gilt paper, top edge gilt, contemporary binding signed by Lagadec, elected best craftsman of France in 1927.

    Philosopher and epistemologist, Jean Cavaillès was one of the principal military leaders of the internal Resistance. Companion of the Liberation and co-founder of the Libération resistance movement, he distanced himself from it and created, at the instigation of Colonel Passy in April 1942, the espionage and sabotage network Cohors, while continuing to teach at the Sorbonne. Arrested several times, detained in a camp then tortured during his third and fourth detentions, in Paris, he gave up no names.
    He was shot at Arras on April 4, 1944.

    Ronéotype réalisé par Boris Vian de son manuscrit original, avec ajout autographe du titre : "Le penseur" et deux corrections autogrpahes, nouvelle initialement parue dans la revue Dans le train n°15, 1949, puis publiée dans le recueil posthume Le Loup-Garou en 1970.

    Sans doute réalisé pour conserver une copie de sa nouvelle, avant l'envoi à la revue Dans le train, ce ronéotype du manuscrit originale signé a été conservé dans les archives de l'écrivain jusqu'à sa mort. les deux corrections autogrpahes et le titre au crayon semble indiquer que Boris Vian avait prévu une nouvelle publication.

    Cette biogaphie express de la courte vie d'un philosophe de génie : Urodonal Carrier, était destinée à être lue le temps d'un trajet en transport en commun. Elle fait partie douze textes que Boris Vian publia entre 1948 et 1950 dans la revue humoristique Dans le train.

        First edition of Jean Gaulmier's critical study of André Breton's poem "Ode à Charles Fourier", published in its entirety with commentary. The poem is preceded by an important introduction in three parts: "Birth of the poem", "Surrealism and Fourierism" and "Fourierism and literature". Iconography.         Rare copy signed and inscribed by André Breton: "To René Magritte, another Prince of Attractions, his friend André Breton"
        Breton's inscription bears witness to the deep appreciation between the two artists – despite critics who conveyed rumors of a definitive split based on their past quarrels. Indeed, it was in a letter to Magritte sent with the copy of his Ode that Breton described his disagreements with Magritte as "rare independent storms" between them. In so doing, he implicitly acknowledged a filiation between French and Belgian Surrealism of which Magritte was the undisputed - although unofficial - leader.
        Moreover, his letters with Breton and the reading of his work inspired René Magritte to make an introspective reflection, instrumental in understanding his work. He shared his thoughts with his friend on 12 October 1961:
        "I read L'ode à Charles Fourier again, with emotion. It goes without saying that it is far superior to the commentaries that accompany it, however scholarly they may be. "Le La" makes one long for the knowledge of many other thoughts that come in the night. The attention given to these thoughts seems only to be possible if our life is really "taken seriously" (Last night I thought of a car steering wheel made of a piece of bacon). There's no doubt that at night we can listen to or see things we don't care about, but during the day too many things we don't care about come our way. There are no daydreams, just the freedom to be attentive, during the day, to what is not indifferent to us. I believe that the world - as a dream - offers itself to us only in sleep" (Magritte, Letter to André Breton, 12 October 1961)
