First edition (cf. Tailliart, 2732).
Essentially a history of the colonisation of Algeria, divided into three periods: 1830-41; 1841-1851; 1851-1865, the last of these being regarded as the most brilliant.
Contemporary half blond calf, spine with five raised bands tooled with gilt dotted rules and gilt compartments decorated with grotesque ornaments, cherry-red morocco lettering-piece, headcaps worn away with some loss, joints fragile, marbled paper boards, marbled endpapers and pastedowns, speckled edges.
The table of contents leaf is detached; a folding plate has been added at the end of the volume: Martyre de sainte Agnès à Rome.
