First large octavo edition illustrated with 68 drawings by George Roux as well as 2 maps. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel known as "au globe doré" type 3, spine with lighthouse, second board type Engel "h" according to Jauzac, all edges gilt, publisher's BH catalogue at rear. Headcaps slightly sunken as usual, spine very lightly faded, original blue endpapers marginally lightened as customary, a tiny corner lack to one endpaper, some foxing mainly at beginning and end of volume. Seconde patrie is a robinsonade. A great admirer of the novel Le Robinson suisse written in 1812 by the Swiss German pastor Johann David Wyss, Jules Verne imagines a sequel to the adventures of the Zermatt family. Handsome copy.
