Edition illustrated with 68 illustrations by George Roux including 20 large chromolithographs and one map. Catalogue Y in-fine. Publisher's Hetzel binding signed Engel known as "au globe" type 4, spine with lighthouse, second cover type Engel "i" according to Jauzac, all edges gilt. Spine lightly faded with minor rubbing and corners rubbed. Endpapers changed and scattered foxing mainly at beginning and end of volume. Le Sphinx des glaces is a fantasy novel, intended as a sequel to Edgar Poe's novel - to which it is dedicated -, Les Aventures d'Arthur Gordon Pym, published in 1838. Copy not recorded by Jauzac.
