First illustrated edition, published in the same year as the original duodecimo. The collection contains 12 short stories, each illustrated with a wood engraving headpiece by a different artist: Gambard, Jeanniot, Merwart, Le Natur, Adrien Marie, Myrbach, J. Roy, Grasset, Arcos, Renouard, Tirado, Rochegrosse, in addition to a frontispiece and the illustration on the front cover.
Contemporary burgundy half-shagreen binding with corners. Smooth spine decorated with 4 complex tools and 2 fleurons, fillet lines on boards and corners. Top edge gilt. The covers have been preserved, without the spine. Fresh throughout, with occasional light foxing here and there. Spine sunned. Light traces of rubbing.
