Presentation inscription signed by Guy de Maupassant « à Monsieur [Amaury] Renoul », manager of the Librairie Nouvelle, established at 15 boulevard des Italiens. The bookshop's back room served as a literary salon frequented by many of the leading artistic and intellectual figures of the French capital.
Amaury Renoul (1837-1898) was one of the most prominent men of letters in late nineteenth-century Paris. He was notably acquainted with Flaubert. Maupassant presented at least three books to him between 1884 and 1886.
