Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Victor Havard was a Parisian publisher and bookseller active in the last quarter of the 19th century. Based in Paris, he specialized in publishing contemporary literature and became particularly known as Guy de Maupassant's publisher. He published the major works of the Norman writer, including La Maison Tellier (1881), Une Vie (1883), Bel-Ami (1885), Au Soleil (1884), Mont-Oriol (1887), and L'Inutile Beauté (1890), the latter being the last collection published during Maupassant's lifetime. The address 175 boulevard Saint-Germain is associated with him. Relations between Maupassant and Havard deteriorated in 1891, as evidenced by the writer's correspondence. Havard also published other authors of the late 19th century and distributed standard editions of French literature. His publishing activity is documented from at least 1876 to 1891, a period during which he contributed significantly to the dissemination of naturalist and realist literary production.
