First edition, one of the few copies on Holland paper, the only deluxe copies. Bradel binding in red half cloth, smooth spine, black morocco title label rubbed, original wrappers preserved, binding signed by Henry-Joseph, typical of copies from the Goncourt library. Autograph inscription signed by the author to Edmond de Goncourt: "A Edmond de Goncourt hommage fervent." ["To Edmond de Goncourt fervent homage."] Inscription - as often - by Edmond de Goncourt on the front endpaper: "Edition originale. Exemplaire sur papier de Hollande." ["First edition. Copy on Holland paper."] Paul Margueritte, member of the first Académie des Goncourt and naturalist writer, was close to Edmond de Goncourt. He was one of the signatories of the Manifesto of Five against Zola's La Terre and one of the regulars at the Grenier d'Auteuil.
