The first endleaf of the binding is probably missing. Paul Margueritte, member of the first Goncourt Academy and naturalist writer, was close to Edmond de Goncourt. He was one of the signatories of the Manifesto of Five against Zola's La Terre and one of the regulars at the Grenier d'Auteuil.

The subject of this letter is a professional exchange concerning editing and illustration for a reissue of The Woman in the Eighteenth Century . Goncourt insists on the importance of engravings and wants to get involved in their realization: " [...] I would put at your disposal my little iconographic science of time to arrive at a completely documentary illustration. "
