Heavyweight Summer Beach Reads

Short Stories & TalesShort Stories & Tales
Short Stories & Tales

Instead of searching for lost time, try finding it again with a short story: they are often the finest fare, and at the tale end, these brief accounts prove joys beyond compare. So let the simple heart of Bartleby transform the balls of tallow into the Venus of Ille…

Foreign Literature

Pardon my non-french! You are all forgiven, you strange strangers who delight us with your torrents of tongue, your lexicons of legend, your diamonds of idiom. Let us relish the ripeness of your rhetoric, the wild, unheard-of wonders you weave, told in the tongue of Shakespeare, Goethe, Li Po, Dante, Cervantes, Khayyam, Sappho - or in the translations of Gide, Nerval, Judith Gauthier, Rivarol, Oudin, Toussaint, or Renée Vivien!

Our Great ModernsOur Great Moderns
Our Great Moderns

A traversal through the works of those who have been writing, imagining, and creating since the late twentieth century. This selection brings together pieces that mirror the shifts of an era — literary gestures, singular voices, new perspectives. Each book and object has been chosen to capture, through its material presence, the living imprint of our contemporaries.

Lettres de Benjamin Constant à Madame Récamier

E. Dentu|Paris 1864 (S.d)|14.50 x 23.20 cm|relié

€600
⬨ 73164
The rare first edition. A manuscript note bound at the beginning of the work states: First edition suppressed by court order, it contains 74 unpublished letters. One can read on a manuscript leaf bound before the title: "Edition seized and destroyed when it was about to be put on sale at the request of Benjamin Constant's sister and the niece and universal legatee of Madame Récamier, Madame Charles Lenormant. Is not in the Bibliothèque Nationale." A second manuscript leaf on Louis Colet has also been bound following the first.
Modern half morocco binding with tan corners signed Alix at the bottom of the pastedown. Jansenist spine with raised bands. Gilt title. Gilt edges. Covers and spine preserved. Uncut copy with full margins.
Very handsome copy.
"Few love letters are as beautiful as those from Benjamin Constant to Mme Récamier". Jean Mistler, in La Revue des deux mondes. Mistler specifies that Lenormant's 1882 edition was much altered whereas Louise Colet's edition is accurate. Introduction and preface by Louise Colet.
